In the territory of Gaiole, the heart of Chianti Classico, cradle of good wine and good food, at some minutes from the most famous castles and villages of the area, immersed in a beautiful natural surrounding, is located a prestigious and particular hotel, obtained from an ancient XV century water-mill. Medieval mills were property of secular and Christian seignories, and during the centuries they became part of the farms. L’Ultimo Mulino was a property of Villa Vistarenni.

When there was the exodus from the country to the cities, mills were the first structures to be left, but tourism, which moves from the big art cities to Chianti countryside surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, has stimulated the restoration of villages and farmhouses which had been abandoned and which have reborn from the last centuries. For mills, it hasn’t been easy to find another activity which could allow to these charming structures to keep the original concept; l’Ultimo Mulino, after a valuable restoration is one of these structures, with the scrupulous repair it has maintained all that survived till the moment of abandon.

In the surroundings of Vistarenni you can get to the hotel crossing a little XV century bridge and you find yourself in the atmosphere of Tuscan farmhouses, once owned by the country house of Villa Vistarenni; something both town and rural which charms and enchants, done in order to satisfy every desire.

Inside the hotel it’s still possible to see a lot of ancient details, which testify the old function of this building, when millers used to grind the grain. The footways and the corridors which leads to the rooms have been obtained over the deep mill-race, where run the water, thanks to which the big wooden wheel revolved. Of this wheel, only the central pivot has lasted till nowadays. Characteristic and typical Tuscan is the central lounge, with its thirteen arches, all of them in stone and fired bricks. In this wonderful and large lounge, which welcomes Ultimo Mulino’s guests, is served the rich Buffet breakfast. In the lounge you can find also a precious piano and the old wood-fired oven.

L’Ultimo Mulino feeds itself on these essences, it preserves and enhances them in a suggestive and unique setting. It is the only water-mill where water came from the high, its water tank is now the wonderful pool, sorrounded by trees and genistas, between them you can relax and have a dip. At your arrival you will be welcomed in a large ivy-covered patio surrounded by roses, where once were unloaded the goods and now is a delicious location to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner or an nice appetizer after a day immersed in Chianti’s culture.
